With a last minute venue change due to unforeseen circumstances beyond the Club hierarchy's control the field were forced to return again to the ever reliable Yarrabah circuit for the 2nd Road Race of the season. In an attempt to make amends the distances were honoured with Div 1 to complete the 67 klm course inclusive of 2 x Green Hill loops. Div 2 - 58 klm with 1 x Green Hill loop and Div 3 – 42 klm out to Bessie's Point and back. Division 1 Again this week Division 1 was off like a rocket with Bamford, Jackson, Skerke, Edwards, Tonello and Ingram all feeling a little bit frisky in the first 10 k's. A couple of attempts were made to get off the front and as a result the speeds rarely dropped below 45 klm/h continually putting the riders in the peleton on the limit. Eventually the boys settled down a bit and though the speed remained high and a couple of the boys in Edwards and Tonello took turns off the front for short periods the bunch was all brought together a couple of k's before the first of the Green Hill loops. It didn't take long to stay that way. As soon as the group hit the first climb a small group of 7 containing Bamford, Jackson, Standage, Skerke, Orchid, Edwards and Tonello put the accelerator down and quickly opened a gap on the rest of the field. These 7 riders worked hard to ensure that this breakaway stayed away and by the time the first loop had been completed the remainder of the bunch had lost sight of them. On the second loop Edwards and Tonello split from the breakaway and took it all the way to the line with Edwards nudging out Tonello for the win. A short distance back the rest of the breakaway group Jackson, Standage, Orchid, Skerke and Bamford strolled over the line a few minutes ahead of the bunch. Results:
Division 2 A good sized Division 2 field set off along Yarrabah Road all with the knowledge that on their return the Bunch were going to have to tackle the Green Hill loop for the first time this season. As a result a solid but conservative approach was taken by most of the peleton over the first half of the race. This was short lived however as a few of the bunch's stronger riders such as Julian Oates and Mark Trinca began to turn up the pace putting a few of the boys into the red zone. As they reached the climb the field began to split with 1 or 2 losing contact with the main bunch. As the remaining bunch were on the homeward stretch one of the eventual place getter's was probably a little fortunate not to receive the wrath of the commissaire and fellow riders when he hitched a ride with the passing Division 1 breakaway thus opening up a gap on the field. Fortunately the rider was educated in race etiquette before too much damage had been done and promptly returned to his bunch having gained a valuable lesson. It was Oates who was the eventual winner improving on his last weeks 3rdover Mark Trinca and James Bourke. Results;
Division 3 Again this week the Division 3 field was small and with nowhere to hide, each rider spent a considerable amount of time with their face in the wind and definitely earning their entry fee by pulling long turns at the front. Anne Ryan worked tirelessly for the second week running with Leela Hancox and SBS commentator John Flynn making sure they remained in contention. First time racer Neil Robson made a good account for himself before finding the going a little tough but definitely will be better for the run. It was Ryan for the second week running that was in front when in counted with Hancox and Flynn rounding out the podium. Results;
Special thanks to our Marshalls - Jeff, John, Webby, Mundi, Ross, Don & Glenys who without their help the races would not of been possible... |
